Curriculum
v Giovanni Casiraghi obtained his Laurea Degree
in Chemistry from the University of Pavia in 1965 performing research with
Prof. S. Pietra (first total synthesis of aza-indole systems).
v In 1965, he was awarded a research
fellowship from Shell Research Ltd. to work in the group of Prof. S. Pietra
at the University of Pavia, where he performed research on the direct
nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions on phenazine systems.
v In the fall of 1968 he joined the University of Parma as an Assistant Professor with tenure and has
done research on the regioselective electrophilic substitution of metal
phenolates in the group of Prof. G. Casnati.
v In 1982 he was promoted to Associate
Professor and that same year he began his independent career at University
of Parma, where he supervised a team that was engaged in the regio- and
stereocontrolled synthesis of a variety of phenolic derivatives (novel one-step
synthesis of salicylaldehyde, new process for the production of fast-curing
novolac resins, first enantioselective Friedel-Crafts reactions).
v In the spring of 1986 he was promoted to Full Professor, holding a chair in Organic Chemistry at the Faculty
of Sciences, University of Sassari.
Then, the main focus of his work was shifted towards the exploitation of
furan-, pyrrole-, and thiophene-based dienoxysilane synthons for the synthesis
of structurally diverse natural and natural-like bioactive compounds
(diastereocontrolled synthesis of polyhydroxylated pyrrolizidine and
indolizidine derivatives, synthesis of carbohydrates and nitrogen and carbon
analogues).
v In the fall of 1991 he returned to the University
of Parma holding the chair in
Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy.
Main Research Subjects
v At present, his major interests are in the field of asymmetric synthesis of
carbasugars, densely functionalized heterocycles, and natural and unnatural
amino acids and pseudopeptides.
v Quite recently, his interests have been shifted towards the development of
a new class of integrin-targeted RGD-based cyclo-pseudopeptidic binders and
their conjugates for cancer-directed diagnosis and therapy.

Avocations
Prof. Casiraghi's other interests include rock climbing and mountaineering. A National Instructor of ski-mountaineering, Prof. Casiraghi has also been Head of the "Dolomiti di Brenta" School of Skiing and Alpinism, and member of the Central School of Skiing and Alpinism of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI). He has also represented Italy as part of the Alpinism Committee of the International Union of Alpinism Associations (UIAA). He has completed 800 rock- and ice-climbing routes, opened 42 new itineraries, and completed over 1000 ski-mountaineering routes many of which had never been braved. Furthermore, Prof. Casiraghi has written 2 books about the Brenta and Adamello-Presanella alpine itineraries.
