La
costante presenza della tematica del potere nella drammaturgia Gotica rivela
il ruolo sociale che questa ricopriva nel portare alla luce le strategie
del potere interne alla società dell’epoca. Il paradossale movimento
di sovversione/conservazione che Michel Foucault individua nel potere,
si traduce all’interno del Gotico in una duplice spinta verso il rilascio/contenimento
delle tensioni sociali; inoltre, analizzando le più evidenti manifestazioni
del potere –politica, religione, soprannaturale, sistema patriarcale– risulta
che su tale paradosso si basa la struttura stessa delle opere drammatiche
Gotiche.

The
constant presence of the theme of power in Gothic dramas shows how this
dramatic genre acquired a social role, by revealing power’s strategies
which run through the society. Michel Foucault recognizes that power is
permeated by a paradoxical movement of subversion/conservatism, which in
Gothic drama becomes a twofold force towards the release/containment of
social anxieties. So, by analysing the most apparent power expressions
–politics, religion, supernatural, patriarchy– it is possible to see how
even the structure of Gothic dramas is based upon this paradox

Il
diciottesimo secolo ha assistito ad un notevole incremento della partecipazione
femminile in ambito teatrale. L’entrata delle donne a teatro ha costituito
un evento di cruciale importanza, in quanto ha rappresentato il segno più
espressivo del loro ingresso nella sfera pubblica, minando i ruoli sociali
convenzionalmente stabiliti dalle norme patriarcali. Obiettivo di questo
studio è quello di riscoprire la vita, i pensieri e le opere
di una delle figure più ignote del palcoscenico romantico, Mariana
Starke. Rappresentando la contemporanea situazione coloniale in India,
la drammaturgia di questa scrittrice si inserisce in maniera del tutto
singolare in uno dei discorsi portanti della letteratura romantica britannica,
l’orientalismo. Nello stesso tempo, discutendo le maggiori questioni politico-sociali
di fine secolo, essa esprime le contraddizioni e le ambiguità di
un’epoca ricca conflitti ideologico-culturali, come la seconda metà
del Settecento.

Eighteenth
century Britain saw a remarkable increase of women’s participation in theatre.
This occurrence was crucially important since women’s presence in the world
of the stage can be considered as the most expressive sign of their entrance
into the public sphere, mining the social roles conventionally established
by patriarchal laws. This study aims to rediscover the life, the thoughts
and the works of one of the most unknown figures of the romantic theatre,
Mariana Starke. Staging the contemporary colonial situation in India, Starke’s
dramaturgy singularly fits in a fundamental discourse of British romantic
literature, orientalism. At the same time, discussing the major socio-political
issues of the age, it shows all the contradictions and ambiguities of a
period full of ideological and cultural conflicts, such as the second half
of the eighteenth century.
