Description of the project

Objectives

Nowadays, global climate challenges must be tackled to ensure proper resource management through sustainable models, with mobility management being one of the toughest environmental and social challenges. With 23% of Europe’s GHG emissions produced by transport, accelerating sustainability in transportation systems is crucial. Encouraging the adoption of new technologies and efficient systems through innovation in the transport sector generates a direct impact on the environment and quality of life, reduces energy dependence, and creates new jobs and business opportunities. To tackle these challenges, the project will achieve the following objectives:

  • Make mobility system greener: promoting innovative and "sustainable mobility" providing new lightweight solutions, new propulsion systems, H2 fuels and electric.
  • Make mobility system safer: promoting digital products and processes to foster smart management
  • Increase resilience and efficiency of mobility: fostering a digital transformation of mobility service system both for public and private transport
  • Create customized and accessible mobility: allowing new social inclusion through digital innovation for all type of users.
  • Strengthening the supply chain and national competitiveness: boosting synergies between companies and research institutions in the transportation
  • Strengthening skills in the industrial field: supporting national/regional policies by identifying priorities and strategies for a parallel and osmotic development of research and industrial application

Activities

The general objectives mentioned above can be achieved by allocating the project research efforts on 14 different strategic thematic areas, that will be the spheres of investigation of 14 different spokes:

  • Spoke 1 – Air Mobility
  • Spoke 2 – Sustainable Road vehicle
  • Spoke 3 – Waterways
  • Spoke 4 – Rail Transportation
  • Spoke 5 – Light Vehicle and Active Mobility
  • Spoke 6 – Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV)
  • Spoke 7 – CCAM, Connected networks and Smart Infrastructure
  • Spoke 8 – MaaS & Innovative Services
  • Spoke 9 – Urban Mobility
  • Spoke 10 – Logistics and Freight
  • Spoke 11 – Innovative Materials and Lightweighting

Results of the project

The project will contribute to create a sustainable and safe transport for people and goods by increasing demand for green vehicles and improving transport efficiency, safety, interoperability, and logistics effectiveness. To increase the impact of the results, the synergy within actors will improve:

  • Social sustainability: Identifying and managing business impacts on people, including direct safety, and reducing environmental impact of GHG emissions.
  • Environmental sustainability: Responsible interaction with the environment to avoid depletion or degradation of natural resources through reduced fuel consumption, alternative fuel sources, and efficient transportation.
  • Economic sustainability: Supporting long-term economic development while protecting environmental, social, and cultural elements. CNMS aims to reduce criticality through workshops involving companies.

Within the larger idea/concept of sustainability, the project will impact these aspects:

  • Sustainable and safe transport for people and goods which focuses upon social and environmental sustainability
  • The strengthening of the competitiveness of the mobility sector which directly links to economic sustainability
  • High-level skills development which focusses upon knowledge building and sharing and hence longterm sustainability and impact on mobility

The project will focus not only on technological development but also on high-level education through the recruitment of PhDs and RDTA, and the development of thematic LLL programs and MOOCS for company research staff.

Research activities carried out in each Spoke are defined for a long-term strategy of exploitation of innovation beyond the research and academic world, boosting the technological transfer of benefits and impacts created in a specific field beyond it, so to enable commercial exploitation and new markets uptake.

CNMS, thanks to a wide involvement of the sector's corporations –the true strength of the proposal– will implement though out its operation following actions.
