EWWR 2025 - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

From November 22 to 30, 2025, the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) returns. This is an important initiative promoted by the European Commission to raise awareness among citizens, organizations, and businesses about good practices in waste prevention and management. The central theme of this year is the proper management of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), a stream that is steadily growing in the European Union (+2% annually), of which only 40% is currently recycled

The University of Parma joins EWWR 2025

The Sustainable University Group of the University of Parma is organizing a special collection of small WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), such as mobile phones and small household appliances. The initiative is part of the activities of the EUGreen Alliance, supporting responsible practices and a more sustainable future. The entire university community is invited to bring unusable devices to the following dedicated collection points:

  • Campus of Science and Technology
    • Building 25 – Teaching Hub “Aule delle Scienze,” in front of the main entrance
    • Building 05 – Engineering Teaching, main entrance
  • Veterinary Campus
    • Building 11, in front of the entrance to the student lounge
  • Via Kennedy Campus
    • Cloister of Humanities

UNIPR Installation Party

On November 28, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at the tables of the Scientific Engineering headquarters, the "UNIPR Installation Party" will take place—an initiative designed to:

  • Reduce the creation of new WEEE
  • Achieve tangible savings by extending the life of IT devices

The event is especially aimed at those who:

  • Cannot upgrade their computer to Windows 11
  • Use a MacBook that no longer receives updates
  • Simply wish to try a new operating system that is free, high-performing, and privacy-respecting

During the event, participants will receive free assistance with the installation and configuration of Linux-based operating systems. This will allow them to continue using their devices safely, without having to purchase new ones!

And, as with any proper party, there will be drinks and snacks.

From Today’s Waste to Tomorrow’s Resource.

The Impact of Design in the Electronics Supply Chain

The Bachelor’s Degree in Sustainable Design for the Food System invites you to take part in an event on the topic of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), which will be held on November 26th from 10:00 to 13:30, as part of the European Week for Waste Reduction.

The activity is aimed at students and the wider community to promote a culture of repairability and reuse, through the contributions of institutions and local organizations active in the supply chain. The event will be followed by a guided demonstration of the dismantling of a small household appliance, open to all registered participants: a concrete opportunity to “get hands-on” with objects, understand practical difficulties, and open a shared moment of reflection.

Location: Campus of Sciences, Building Q02, Conference Hall Time: 10:00 – 13:30

Agenda

  • 10:00 – DSSA (Sustainable Design for the Food System). Introduction and opening remarks.
  • 10:10 – EduIren (Educational section of Iren). What WEEE is, how it is managed, and Iren’s role.
  • 10:30 – Emilia-Romagna Region (Waste and Contaminated Sites Remediation, Public Environmental Services). Strategies, directives, and projects in the WEEE supply chain. The role of the Region.
  • 10:50 – AltroGiro (Reuse Center of Parma). How their project was born, its main purpose, and activities related to reuse/repair, with a focus on electronic products.
  • 11:10 – EcoSolGea (Reuse Center of Parma). Their role, collaboration with collection centers, and international projects involving the repair and distribution of consumer appliances in developing areas.
  • 11:30 – DSSA. Research on circular design and introduction to the second part.
  • 11:50 – EcoSolGea. Guided demonstration of dismantling an espresso machine, to practically observe how to foster a virtuous culture of repair and reuse of electronic products. Upon confirmation via the link, participants will be able to try dismantling the casing themselves, to realize how upstream design choices impact maintenance, repair, and disposal operations.
  • 13:20 – DSSA. Closing remarks and farewell.
