Sustainable University Working Group
The ‘Sustainable University Group’ working group is tasked with:
developing, in close collaboration with the ‘Building and Infrastructure’ management area, developing a plan to mitigate the University's environmental impact, with particular reference to (I) upgrading the building stock, (II) conserving and enhancing biodiversity and ecosystems, (III) discouraging vehicle traffic in favour of public transport and soft mobility, (IV) managing waste by promoting recycling and reuse;
supporting the University's actions within the scope of its third mission in order to respond effectively to the needs of the local community;
drawing up the “University of Parma Sustainability Report” every two years;
coordinating the University's activities within the Network of Universities for Sustainable Development (RUS).
The working group:
is coordinated by the Rector or his/her delegate, who keeps it constantly informed of the results obtained and the project proposals that are being developed;
is administratively supported by the Rector's General/Technical Secretariat;
may establish an internal organisation to carry out the above tasks and achieve the objectives. To this end, the working group is composed of 10 sub-groups, 8 of which are thematic; student representatives are directly involved in some of the latter.
The working group's activities are organised into:
subgroups, managed through internal coordination and focused on specific topics of interest, relating to (a) relevant challenges among those of WP8 of the EU GREEN Alliance, (b) contributions requested within the Parma Carbon Neutrality Territorial Alliance and the Climate City Contract between the Municipality of Parma and the European Commission, for Horizon Europe's “100 Carbon Neutral Cities by 2030” Mission, (c) the management of relevant questions in national and international quality assessments (rankings) to which the University participates, (d) any contributions requested within the framework of the University's territorial relations, (e) any other internal needs of the University;
coordination between the Rector or his/her delegate and all the representatives of the thematic subgroups
plenary meetings, held periodically, for the purpose of providing information and deliberating on the proposals developed in the thematic subgroups.
Each subgroup is coordinated by a representative, who organises its activities in synergy with the working group coordinator. When the members include a delegate of the Rector on specific issues of the subgroup itself, the latter takes on the coordination. The delegates join the RUS Working Groups relevant to the thematic subgroups in which they are included.
The proposals developed in the thematic subgroups are discussed in the coordination subgroup and approved by the working group in plenary session. They are then presented to the Student Council in order to keep them systematically informed and ensure, where possible, their involvement and collaboration. At the end of the sharing process, the approved proposals are forwarded to the University's governing bodies.
Coordination sub-group
Ensures the direction and coordination of the working group's activities through regular meetings between the representatives of the thematic sub-groups. Critically analyses the results in the rankings to which the University subscribes and develops strategies for improving performance. Coordinates the activities set out in “Challenge 10” of WP8 of EU GREEN – “Sustainable Governance” and monitors the results.
