If you are not a citizen of an EU country, you have two options for receiving healthcare:
1. Registration with the National Health Service (SSN)
This gives you full access to public healthcare services in Italy.
How to do it:
- Contact the AUSL district responsible for your area of residence.
- Submit the following documents:
- identity document
- residence permit application
- self-certification of residence
- receipt of payment for registration
Registration has a cost and is valid for the entire calendar year (from 1 January to 31 December), regardless of the date of registration.
After registering, you will receive:
- a personal health card
- the possibility to choose a general practitioner.
2. Private health insurance
As an alternative to the NHS, you can take out private insurance covering:
- at least €30,000
- your entire stay in Italy
The insurance must also be valid for emergency treatment and hospitalisation.
