Ionising radiation is a type of radiation with sufficient energy to remove electrons from atoms and molecules, creating ions. Ionising radiation can be composed of subatomic particles (alpha particles, betas and neutrons) or ions or even atoms moving at high speeds, or even electromagnetic waves with frequencies (or wavelengths) at the more energetic end of the electromagnetic spectrum.
This process can affect biological matter and surrounding materials, which is why ionising radiation is widely studied in physics, medicine and environmental protection.
