Program description:
The University of Parma (Italy), in collaboration with the University of Angers (France), the University of Extremadura (Spain), and the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wroclaw (Poland), are offering their students the opportunity to participate in a mixed intensive program (BIP). The mixed intensive program is officially approved by the EU under ERASMUS+ 2021/2027 and is developed within the framework of EU GREEN. The course is in its third edition this year, still coordinated by the University of Parma, but this year the in-person part will be held at the University of Wroclaw.
The world population has hoped the figure of 8 billion people. There is an ever-increasing demand for an increase in food production for quantity and quality, but agribusiness and the processing industry have a strong impact on the environment. With this BIP we aim to make students aware of the problems that need to be addressed from different perspectives: environment, food production, management and law. The program will be divided into four sections: ecology, food science, economics and law. The ecology module supports students in understanding how to produce an inventory of pressures at the watershed scale, organized in a database and linked to a GIS, how to calculate soil system budgets and water pollution risk through real case studies and field visits, and how to counter this risk with nature-based solutions. The food module addresses issues of sustainable food production by integrating solutions for waste recovery, food production efficiency and sustainability, food security and food needs, while also considering environmental impacts. Key topics in the economics module will be the concept of transition in terms of the potential contribution of innovative policies, localized production and distribution approaches, new technologies and alternative food and consumption scenarios. The law module aims to familiarize participants with the holistic approach the European Union (EU) is taking toward food sustainability and regulation of novel foods.
The BIP was created with the idea of sharing competencies and skills present in the four participating universities and sharing them with students from four different regions of Europe so that they take home and possibly adapt what they will learn in Wroclaw to their own reality.
At the end of this BIP course, students, as well as faculty, will have the opportunity to exchange experiences and knowledge. In all four modules, students will be guided by faculty through a pathway from knowledge to action, where they will learn how to deal with the complexity of the above issues and the conflicts they often produce, enhancing education, outreach, and human, professional, and institutional efforts. In addition, they will actively participate in working groups, field workshops, practical exercises, and for the virtual part in online lectures and meetings.
