Description of the project ObjectivesReturn (Multi-risk science for resilient communities under a changing climate) – in an extended partnership with the aim to strengthen the research chains on environmental, natural and anthropogenic risks at national level and promote their participation in European and global strategic value chains. Activities Four “Vertical Spokes – VS” have been established to gain the understanding of the dealt processes to improve the natural and anthropogenic hazard assessment, also by returning dynamic maps, developing novel and smart methodologies to assess, monitor and forecast quantitative scenarios of the effects, useful for the transversal spoke’s activities focused on the impact and strategies:Spoke 1 – VS1: Water Spoke 2 – VS2: Ground instabilities Spoke 3 – VS3: Earthquakes and Volcanoes Spoke 4 – VS4: Environmental DegradationSpoke 5 – TS1: Urban and metropolitan settlements Spoke 6 – TS2: Multi-Risk Resilience of Critical Infrastructures Spoke 7 – TS3: Communities’ resilience to risks: social, economic, legal and cultural dimensionsSpoke 8 – DS: Science underpinning Climate services for risk mitigation and adaptation
Role of the University of Parma in the project The role of the Parma unit within MARCUS will be of an experimental nature, with activities carried out at the Hydraulics and Hydraulic Constructions Laboratory (LIeCI) of the University of Parma, the Coastal Engineering Laboratory (LIC) of the Polytechnic University of Bari, and the laboratory of the Andalusian Inter-University Institute for Earth System Research (IISTA-CEAMA) in Granada, Spain.
Departments of the University of Parma involved in the project Department of Engineering and Architecture

Expected results OBJECTIVE 1: to understand the dynamics induced by multiple forcings at a microtidal estuaryOBJECTIVE 2: to understand the hydrodynamics governing estuarine processes via lab testsOBJECTIVE 3: to analyze compound-flooding occurrences via numerical modeling of synchronous forcings, including future projectionsOBJECTIVE 4: to develop adaptation pathways based on Nature-based Solutions (NbS)
