Description of the project

The PhySol-FHC project, led by the University of Parma in collaboration with Basilink Art S.r.l.s., aims to enhance the protection and valorization of the CSAC (Centro Studi e Archivio della Comunicazione) heritage using advanced digital technologies. The project focuses on creating an experimental model for the use of CSAC's fragile and hidden collections, integrating gigapixel 2.5D scanning, 3D photogrammetry, and virtual modeling. The goal is to develop new exhibition paths that are both real (tactile paths for visually impaired audiences) and virtual (accessible through VR headsets and interactive screens). This initiative seeks to make hidden physical objects accessible to all, while also emphasizing the importance of archives in preserving cultural heritage.

The project involves several key activities, including the selection and digitalization of 70 artworks, the development of a web-based platform for virtual access, and the creation of interactive and immersive experiences. The collaboration between the University of Parma and Basilink Art combines academic research with practical technological development, aiming to create a comprehensive and inclusive approach to cultural heritage preservation and accessibility.

Expected results

The PhySol-FHC project is expected to produce significant advancements in the digitalization and accessibility of cultural heritage. By creating high-quality digital replicas and interactive experiences, the project will enhance public engagement with the CSAC collections, making them accessible to a wider audience, including visually impaired individuals. The development of tactile and virtual exhibition paths will provide new ways for the public to interact with and appreciate cultural heritage, fostering a deeper connection and understanding of the importance of archives.

Additionally, the project aims to set a precedent for the use of digital technologies in cultural heritage preservation. The collaboration between academia and industry will generate valuable insights and methodologies that can be applied to other cultural institutions. The research and technological innovations developed through PhySol-FHC will contribute to the broader field of digital humanities, promoting the sustainable and inclusive use of digital tools in the preservation and valorization of cultural heritage.
