FutureData4EU
Funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND European action and coordinated by the University of Bologna in collaboration with the University of Parma and other universities in the Emilia-Romagna region (University of Ferrara, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Piacenza Campus of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and Piacenza Territorial Pole of the Politecnico di Milano), the FutureData4EU project provides 53 PhD positions for PhD programs in seven thematic areas related to Big Data:
- Health;
- Culture, Creativity, and Inclusive Society;
- Civil Security for Society;
- Digital, Industry, and Space;
- Climate, Energy, and Mobility;
- Alimentation, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment;
- Enabling Technologies.
Building on existing PhD programs at universities in Emilia-Romagna, the project will offer an innovative combination of training, research, and cross-cutting skills in Data Science. PhD students will specialize on the complex cultural, organizational, environmental, technological, and political dynamics related to the application of Big Data.
The management of Big Data through high-performance computing is now considered the wealth of the new knowledge economy, able to offer unprecedented opportunities in different areas of research and innovation and in different application domains, from climate change to health, from mobility to cultural heritage, from the digital transformation of production systems to new materials and financial analysis. In Italy, 70% of the national computing and storage capacity is concentrated in the Emilia-Romagna region, which is therefore a true Data Valley.
The project is funded by the European Commission with more than € 5.3 million, by the Emilia-Romagna Region with € 505.000 from the resources of the European Social Fund Plus, while the total financial commitment of the network of regional universities is close to € 3.1 million, for a total of nearly € 9 million.
