EUGreen - European University Alliance for sustainability

Parma, May 13, 2026 - The University of Parma, within the EU GREEN Alliance activities, is taking part in the celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 with the BioUNIVERSITY Lab, an initiative dedicated to exploring campus biodiversity and Citizen Science.

The event will take place on Tuesday, May 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the University's Science and Technology Campus where students, researchers and academic staff from the University of Parma will be able to document local fauna and flora using the iNaturalist app, thereby contributing to participatory research projects and biodiversity conservation.

The initiative is part of the programme of the Festival dello Sviluppo Sostenibile and forms part of the EUGREEN BioUNIVERSITY Citizen Science project, whose short-term objective is to document campus biodiversity through systematic observations and recordings and, in the longer term, to promote environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation, as well as encouraging collaboration within the academic community and strengthening the relationship between universities and society.

Other European universities participating in the EU GREEN project have also organised dedicated activities aimed at involving students and citizens in the collection of naturalistic data:

  • University of Gävle (Sweden), with a presentation on Citizen Science and a campus field activity on May 27;
  • University of Évora (Portugal), with a 24-hour BioBlitz on May 15-16 at the Herdade da Mitra experimental farm;
  • Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (Germany), with a BioUNIVERSITY Walk on May 22, to document local biodiversity.

The EU GREEN aims to promote participatory research, awareness-raising and biodiversity conservation across European university campuses: taking part is a unique opportunity to discover the natural richness that surrounds us, contribute to scientific research, and strengthen collaboration among European universities committed to environmental protection.
