Legislative Decree 81/2008 establishes in Chapter V of Title VIII the minimum requirements for the protection of workers against health and safety risks arising from exposure to artificial optical radiation during work, with particular regard to risks due to harmful effects on the eyes and skin.

The assessment of the risk of exposure to optical radiation must consider several aspects, such as the type of source (incoherent radiation or laser), the mode of exposure (continuous, pulsed, diffuse, reflected), exposure times, source-operator distances, intensity levels, individual sensitivity (phototype, previous pathologies, use of photosensitising drugs, etc.).

Annex XXXVII of the decree lists the exposure limits: part I for non-coherent radiation (lamps) and part II for coherent radiation (lasers). Compliance with the exposure limits ensures that workers exposed to these sources are protected against all known harmful effects on the eyes and skin.
