How it works

New for this academic year is the introduction of the filter semester, during which you will be required to attend compulsory classes in chemistry and preparatory biochemistry, physics, and biology, for a total of 18 credits (6 per course).

You must complete the filter semester at the location you indicate as your first choice.

To enroll in Medicine and Surgery, School of Dental Medicine, and Veterinary Medicine 25-26, you must therefore, in order:

  1. Register on the Universitaly portal and enter the University of Parma as your first choice
  2. Enroll in the filter semester at our University

When registering on Universitaly, you must also indicate another “related” degree program (in the biomedical, health, pharmaceutical, or veterinary field), which you can enroll in if you are not admitted to Medicine and Surgery, School of Dental Medicine, or Veterinary Medicine. To take the related course, you can enter a location other than your first choice.

The filter semester can be repeated for up to three academic years, even if not consecutive.

At the end of the filter semester, you will have to take the exams in the three subjects required. The exams will be the same nationwide and will take place at the same time, on the same day.

The scores obtained in the individual exams will be valid for the national ranking.

You can find out more about all the stages in the following paragraphs.

How to register on Universitaly

Before proceeding with the next steps, you must register on the national platform Universitaly between 10 a.m. on June 23, 2025, and 5 p.m. on July 25, 2025.

When registering on Universitaly, you will need to specify:

  • the course with a filter semester you wish to enroll in from Medicine and Surgery,  School of Dental Medicine, and Veterinary Medicine
  • the location you wish to enter as your first choice and where you will attend the filter semester
  • at least 10 locations in order of preference (including your first choice) where you intend to continue your studies if you are admitted after the filter semester
  • the related course in the biomedical, healthcare, pharmaceutical, or veterinary field
  • at least 10 locations* in order of preference where you would attend the related course if you are not admitted to the second semester of Medicine and Surgery,  School of Dental Medicine, or Veterinary Medicine but have obtained a score of at least 18/30 in each exam

* It may happen that a course is not available in at least 10 locations in Italy. In this case, you will have to select all available locations.

Once you have registered on Universitaly, you will need to enroll in our filter semester through the Esse3 - Online registry service system.

PLEASE NOTE! You must wait at least 5 minutes between completing your registration on Universitaly and accessing Esse3 - Online registry service for our system to acquire your data from Universitaly.

You will find instructions on how to enroll in the filter semester in the next paragraph.

At this point, the system should already recognize you as a person who must enroll in the filter semester at our University.

Before proceeding with the option to enroll in the filter semester, you must fill in the personal data requested.

Once you have entered all the missing data, you can proceed with enrollment in the filter semester by continuing the “Concorsi nazionali” process or by selecting the menu item REGISTRAR'S OFFICE>CONCORSI NAZIONALI.

Then you must:

  • click on the Enrollment button on the “Enrollment in the filter semester” screen that appears;
  • enter the titles and information requested, if not already present in the system;
  • confirm your choice of the “Enrollment in the filter semester” competition.

Once you have completed these first steps, wait at least 5 minutes, then:

  • select the menu item REGISTRAR'S OFFICE>ENROLMENT;
  • click on Standard enrolment;
  • select the type of course “Filter semester” (you do not need to specify the course);
  • confirm your choice.

You can find out more about all the steps in the procedure by consulting the relevant guide (see the Consult the guide section).

At the end of the procedure, a final summary page will be displayed. To proceed with payment, click on the Check Payments button.

The payment slip will then also be available under REGISTRAR'S OFFICE>PAYMENTS. You must make the payment by July 25, 2025.

If you have income and/or assets abroad, detailed information on how to submit the documentation for the calculation of your financial status can be found on this page.

The application for reduction affects the flat-rate contribution for the filter semester but will also determine the calculation of the contributions you will have to pay later if you enroll in the second semester of the 2025/26 academic year at our University.

Please note that the provisions on concessions may be subject to change in the event of updates to national legislation.

Related courses available

Our university offers the following related courses to choose from:

You will be asked to indicate the related course when registering on Universitaly (see paragraph How to register on Universitaly).

If you are not admitted to Medicine and Surgery, School of Dental Medicine or Veterinary Medicine, you may attend the related course you have indicated only if you have passed at least 18/30 of the three exams at the end of the filter semester.

You may be admitted to attend the related course even at a location that is not your first choice.

If you wish to guarantee yourself a place on one of our related courses before knowing the outcome at the end of the filter semester and Parma is your first choice, we recommend that you also participate in the competitions already scheduled for these courses for the academic year 25-26.

In particular, Biology, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Pharmacy, and Animal Science require admission in chronological order of enrollment with merit, and you can reserve your place even if you have enrolled or intend to enroll in the filter semester.

Health Assistance, Professional Education, Nursing, Orthoptics and Ophthalmic Assistance, and Environment and Workplace Prevention Techniques, on the other hand, require a nationally scheduled entrance exam, which you can take even if you have enrolled or intend to enroll in the filter semester.

Lessons Schedule

In the coming weeks, you will find more details about the educational activities in this section.

Exams and national ranking

At the end of the filter semester, you will have to take the exams in chemistry and preparatory biochemistry (6 credits), physics (6 credits), and biology (6 credits).

The exams will be the same nationwide and will take place at the same time, on the same day.

There will be two exam sessions on the following dates:

  • November 20, 2025, at 11 a.m.
  • December 10, 2025, at 11 a.m.

Each of the three subjects will be tested in a 45-minute exam consisting of 31 questions, including:

  • 15 multiple-choice questions with 5 answer options (only one of which is correct)
  • 16 fill-in-the-blank questions

In the exam session on November 20, you must take all three tests.

On December 10, however, you may decide to retake the test(s) that you did not pass or for which you wish to obtain a better grade.

The scores obtained in the individual exams will be valid for the formation of the national ranking.

You will be included in the national ranking if you obtain a minimum score of 18/30 in each test.

Graduatorie nazionali

  • Fase 2 - Riassegnazione sui posti residui e immatricolazione finale

  • Fase 3 - Riassegnazione sui posti residui e assegnazione d’ufficio

What if I already am a Unipr student?

In this case, you must enroll in the filter semester following the standard procedure described in the previous paragraphs and you do not have to pay the installments for 2025/26 required by your current course, but only the flat-rate contribution for the filter semester (see paragraph Flat-rate contribution).

When you do not renew your enrollment for the new academic year, Esse3- Online registry office will temporarily block your current course and the 2024-2025 academic year. However, you will still be able to take part in exams for the 2023-2024 academic year.

The regulations allow you to enrol or be enroled in a study program other than those related to your previous studies. Therefore, whether you are attending a related course or not, you must enroll only in the filter semester and pay the required fee.

If you are among the winners in the national ranking, you can enroll in Medicine and Surgery, School of Dental Medicine, or Veterinary Medicine and close your previous career unless you wish to pursue a double enrollment (but in that case, the second course should not require attendance).

If you do not pass the filter semester selection, you will have to pay the enrolment fee for the 2025-2026 academic year for your current course.

What if I am a student from outside the EU?

If you are a non-EU student residing abroad, the rules of the filter semester, the stages and deadlines listed above apply also to you.

You must therefore, by July 25 at 5 p.m.:

  1. Register on the Universitaly portal and enter the University of Parma as your first choice
  2. Enroll in the filter semester at our University

Unlike Italian/EU students, however, you have an additional step to complete in order to apply for a visa.

Before registering on Universitaly and enrolling in the filter semester, you must pre-register, also on Universitaly, to start the process for obtaining a visa. The deadline for doing so is also July 25.
